One of the most frequent types of headaches which our patients struggle with is cervicogenic headache which, thankfully, chiropractic can generally help.

Cervicogenic Headaches Explained

A cervicogenic headache is one that originates from an issue in the cervical spine. It could be because of a problem with either the spine itself (specifically, the vertebrae, joints, or discs), or it could be attributable to a problem in the muscles and tendons of your neck. This problem in your spine contributes to compression or irritation of the spinal nerves, which can contribute to headache pain.

How do you know if the headache you are suffering from is a cervicogenic headache? Aside from receiving a diagnosis from a healthcare expert, a common symptom of cervicogenic headaches is tenderness or discomfort in your neck. This is occasionally accompanied by pain in the back of your head or between your shoulder blades.

Headache Relief with Chiropractic

Considering cervicogenic headaches will not go away until whatever issue is initiating them is remedied, it is vital to receive treatment rather than just trying to "wait it out." Chiropractic care is an effective approach, and one that provides a great deal of relief.

In one study released in Chiropractic & Osteopathy, specialists looked at 80 people who had repeated cervicogenic headaches. Half were given chiropractic care and the other 50% underwent light massage therapy. Each participant was assessed 12 and 24 weeks after the procedures and it was found that chiropractic provided the best effects.

Specifically, this study uncovered that chiropractic adjustments gave patients more pain relief and lessened the frequency of headaches that occurred. What's more, it also reduced the disability that resulted from these painful headaches.
